Budgeting For a New Swimming Pool - Things to Consider

!±8± Budgeting For a New Swimming Pool - Things to Consider

If you are thinking about installing an outdoor swimming pool on your property, it is important to be aware of the various components required and the cost implications that each one can have on your budget.

1. Pool construction

Firstly, you have the excavation of the pool area and the construction of the actual pool itself. Options available include an in situ construction (usually of reinforced concrete), or the sinking into the excavation of a preformed metal (or other) pool structure.

Different options will offer different economies and benefits depending upon the location and site conditions in question. It may even prove financially advantageous to have an above ground (or semi above ground) swimming pool. This reduces both construction costs and construction time. It may also remove the need for planning permissions.

Within the construction, special provision should also be made for the lining material. This may be conventional tiles or a more modern vinyl liner. The choice as to which option is selected will again have a significant impact on the project's budget.

2. Heating system

Very few swimming pools can offer year round utilization without some form of heating system. Warm climates may require nothing more than top-up heat in the early morning or evening, but in cooler climates a more expensive heater will be required.

In all cases there will be a budgetary implication, both in terms of the initial purchase and fitting costs and in terms of running costs. Options include "low running cost" solar heating, low output electric heaters, heat exchangers, gas or propane heaters, boilers, condenser boilers and heat pumps.

A heater can become a significant cost in the overall budget of a swimming pool, so it is important to select the right type and power output.

3. Pump and Filtration

Any swimming pool will quickly become unhygienic if the water is not circulated and any impurities removed. Dirty water leads to the production of bacteria and this in turn can result in an unhealthy pool.

For this reason every swimming pool project needs to budget for a pump and filtration system in order to keep the water clean and free from debris and bacteria. The pump is also critical in distributing and circulating important cleaning chemicals.

The costs of pumps and filters are largely determined by pool size, but the heater also has a bearing on the pump which will be required to circulate the pre-heated water.

The different filtration systems available offer differing budgetary implications on the overall project, so considerable though needs to go into which system is best suited to the size and usage of the pool. Filtration system options are based around sand, Diatomaceous earth (DE) and cartridge cleaning methods, sand being the most economic.

4. Covers and enclosures

At the very least, a pool will require a cover to protect it from dirt and debris and to retain the water's heat. However, it may be an option to have an enclosure that not only covers the pool, but which also allows it to be used whilst under cover. This kind of structure can significantly increase the usable swimming season and save on heating costs.

Preparing Your Swimming Pool For The Winter Shut Down

!±8± Preparing Your Swimming Pool For The Winter Shut Down

The first thing to do is make sure the water. Begin by entering your pH. It must be greater than 7.5. If not, just add a little 'dry acid or soda.

Next on the list is chlorine. It wants to increase the chlorine level somewhere between 6 to 10 ppm.

Now add a special product, make sure that the winter that will protect your pool of algae in the winter months to come.

If you added everything you need to be leftThe pump runs for a good 12 hours. This will cause the chlorine produced and distributed in water completely winterized.

To correct the water level in the pool, you must turn off the unit, skimmer valve and let the water drain to 6 "below the skimmer is below. This will prevent the flooding of rain water.

Prepare summer cover for storage, giving it a good clean or with a pressure washer or water fresh and clean. Once it isthoroughly cleaned it can be put away and your winter cover taken out of storage.

Before fitting the winter cover place something in the pool to prevent wall damage if the water in your swimming pool freezes. Anything that will absorb the expansion will do such as some empty chemical containers half filled with water. When you fit the winter cover, make sure it is tight to prevent anything from getting underneath.

Make sure children know the swimming pool is now closed and off limits to visitors. A pool cover is designed to keep leaves, dirt etc. out of the water. It is not designed to take the weight of a person or even a pet. If you do have mall children their are products now available that are winter/safety covers. After a few days you will probably have to tighten the cover again so keep an eye on it for the first few days. You should then check your cover a couple of times a week throughout winter to ensure it is still secure and tight.

With the cover securely in place you should now drain the water from your filter, pump and heater. You will find a drain plug at the bottom of each. If you don't do this, when the water freezes inside the equipment it will most likely damage them beyond repair.

Once early spring arrives and the worst of the weather is over, you should run your pump for a good 6 to 10 hours, depending on the size of your pool, to circulate the chlorine and long life algicide throughout the entire swimming pool.

How to close a pool for the season

!±8± How to close a pool for the season

The nights start getting a little cooler (40 degrees or less), and pool owners recognize it as the first sign that the season is preparing to change. The days warm enough to swim reduce gradually until they regularly are out numbered by the days that are too cool to swim. At some point, it can no longer be denied, the pool season is over!

When it's time to get ready to close up your pool, taking the time to do it right will prevent problems during the winter and help avoid delays opening the pool when the warm weather returns. About three days to a week before you will close your pool, begin preparing it. Adjust the water chemical balance to the following ranges:

pH: 7.2-7.6

Alkalinity: 80-120ppm

Calcium Hardness: 180-220ppm

Reduce filtering times gradually over a week

Once this is accomplished, shock the pool, following the package directions. When the chlorine level is 1.0 to 3.0, winter algaecide can be added and it won't interfere with the effectiveness of the algaecide.

To avoid damage from freezing and/or snow, these items should be removed from a pool and stored for the winter:

Skimmer baskets (all pools)

Wall fittings (all pools)

Cleaners (all pools)

Ladders (above-ground pools)

Decks and rails (above-ground pools)

Solar covers (all pools)

Some pool covers require the water level to be lowered. Check the pool cover manufacturer's recommendations. Use a submersible pump or the filter pump to lower water level if need.

Remove all plugs from equipment like pumps, heater, and chlorinator. Completely drain all equipment. If needed, blow out equipment so there is no water left to freeze and cause damage to the pool equipment. When possible, remove the pump and store indoors. DE filter grids and cartridges will need to be removed and cleaned. It is recommended to lubricate all o-rings and for gas heaters with cast iron plugs it's a good idea to lubricate the threads.

The pool should be as clean and clear as you can make it. If you have been properly maintaining the pool, it shouldn't be much work to skim and vacuum the swimming pool.

For in-ground pools if you can't blow out the lines, add antifreeze, following package directions. Once lines are safe from freezing, install expansion plugs. For above ground pools, the lines can be disconnected. Putting large air pillows in an above-ground pool will help protect the liner.

When the pool is clear and the water is clean and at desired chemical levels, it's time to cover it. A properly fitting cover is essential to proper pool closure.

Swimming pool filter cartridges are the best choice?

!±8± Swimming pool filter cartridges are the best choice?

If your plans for next summer when he in a backyard swimming again or if you already belong to a pool, but less than with the cleanliness of the water content in this season, now is the time for options to filter so that Research your problem pool is free if your family is ready for the first jump. There are three options for the filters: pool filter cartridges, filter sand and DE filters, which are right for you?

Pool Filter Cartridges

This is by far the simplest, most trouble-free option. Large folding paper to serve as a filter media, and models of today are much more square footage than their paper predecessors, which makes them extremely efficient and low care. Most owners can easily install their patrons, at the beginning of the season, and even then just pipe a few times a year, so that it works efficiently. Why are they so popular, many manufacturers of power line pool to offer good deals.

SandFilter

This type of filter system using sand as a filter medium and requires little care. However, when the water circulates from the pool through the diffuser in the filter, the sand acts only as a filter medium is relatively inefficient and incomplete, as it should be recognized only in position, particles, dirt and debris from 40 microns or larger.

DE Filters

Pool water from a plastic grid covered with a dust filter pumpedDiomataceous of land (hence the name: ED). These tiny particles act like sponges and materials trapped in their corners and angles very efficiently.
